1. Pick a setting. Plug in, close the lid and choose one of the 7 browning settings. Lower numbers give lighter waffles.
2. Preheat. Wait for the ready signal before you pour. A hot plate is what gives a crisp outside.
3. Pour and close. Pour enough batter to cover the grid without overfilling, then close the lid.
4. Lift when it signals. Remove the waffle with a heat-safe, non-metal utensil when the done signal sounds. Unplug and let it cool before wiping the plates.
